ONE (1) laborer for the DPW starting at $18/hour
The Town of Elizabethtown Highway Department is accepting applications for a full-time Laborer. Applications may be obtained at the Town Hall and must be returned by Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Questions regarding the position may be directed to Jack Pulsifer at 518-873-2020.
Distinguishing Features of the class: The work involves responsibility for manual work requiring physical endurance and a willingness to perform arduous tasks. Close supervision is always maintained over the work. The incumbent does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Operates air compressor, jack hammer, concrete mixer and pumps;
Assists in patching and grading streets and building manholes;
Rakes, tamps, and shovels cold patch;
Loads and unload trucks;
Excavates and backfills for new construction and repairs;
Clears blocked sewers;
Shovels and removes snow from streets, sidewalks and park and recreation areas;
Assists in the repair of sewers, cabin basins, hydrants, mains and services;
Collects and disposes of rubbish;
Performs unskilled work in connection with the painting and maintenance of signs and bridges;
Digs and refills trenches for water and sewer pipelines;
Lays sewer pipes;
Assist in repairing sweepers and making brooms;
Works on refuse collection route, lifting cans from curbs to truck, or emptying cans on truck;
Cuts grass, trims shrubs, rakes leaves, spades flowers bed and assists in ground maintenance activities;
Oils and cinders streets;
Direct trucks on dump grounds;
Oversees and participates in ash dumping, dump cleaning and leveling;
Performs general building and grounds cleaning tasks.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Ability to perform routine manual work; ability to lift heavy weights; willingness to work under all weather conditions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have valid New York State Driver’s License
