The Deer's Head Inn
The Deer's Head Inn, located in the heart of Elizabethtown, NY, is widely regarded as the oldest tavern in the Adirondacks. Built in the final year of Thomas Jefferson’s presidency, the Inn has served travelers, locals, and public figures for more than two centuries, and later hosted two sitting U.S. presidents.
Reopened in 2016, the Inn operates today as a tavern, restaurant, with boutique lodging, rooted in the long tradition of hospitality, food, and gathering that has defined the building for generations. In recent years, the Deer's Head Inn has received national attention, including a feature in Travel + Leisure, which described it as “a place where history, hospitality, and genuine warmth converge.” Vogue has also signaled the Inn as one of the best places to stay in the Adirondacks.
Tavern & Dining
The Deer's Head Inn offers relaxed, thoughtfully prepared tavern dining built around seasonality, regional sourcing, and approachability. The menu changes regularly and balances creative dishes with familiar comfort-food staples, all served with a distinct lack of pretense. The Inn embraces a “high–low” philosophy: a place where a simple can of beer can sit comfortably alongside a carefully chosen cocktail or a well-prepared entrée; where dietary preferences and substitutions are welcomed; and where conversation, a game of pool, and good food coexist easily. The emphasis is on hospitality, flexibility, and making everyone feel at home. The tavern also hosts occasional live music and community gatherings, features
seasonal outdoor deck seating, and offers a private dining room for small events and special occasions.
